Flop show of Udhampur Lok Sabha MP in ULB elections | | | Mahadeep Singh Jamwal
The ULB elections have given territory to political psychiatrists to have an insight into the delivery of Member of Parliaments as well as Members of Legislative Assemblies belonging to BJP, in their respective constituencies since 2014. As a suffrage and member of civil society hailing from Udhampur and being columnist for number of dailies, my conceptualization in this aspect has wrapped up that the MP from Udhampur (Lok Sabha Constituency) has completely flopped to register the impact of his number of advertisements that resonated from time to time in all the districts of the constituency i.e. Kishtwar, Doda, Ramban, Reasi, Udhampur and Kathua and it reminds me of the lines of 'Euripides' for a play 'Orestes', an Ancient Greek play "When one with honeyed words but evil mind persuades the mob, great woes befall the state." It is always the false that makes you suffer, the false desires and fears, the false values and ideas, the false relationships between people. The results of ULB elections paint the facts that people never took these commitments and announcements seriously and considered them to be as off shoots of the false commitments of PM made during 2014 election campaign, maximum from the Udhampur Lok Sabha constituency grounds. The voters of this lok Sabha seat well understand the meanings of the words of Dr. DaShanne Stokes, a respected American public intellectual, sociologist, author and speaker, that "Truth is hard, propaganda is cheap". Various announcements have remained just advertisements on papers and many have yet to take flight after stone laying ceremony by the MP. The flop show of MP from Udhampur Lok Sabha constituency becomes a matter of more seriousness, when currently; he is the Minister of State (MoS - Independent Charge) for the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, Prime Minister Office, Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Department of Atomic Energy and Department of Space. He was in an advantageous situation, as compared to MP from Jammu Lok Sabha constituency, to set an example of achievements in his constituency. But alas! Nothing such happened. The analysis based on the strength acquired, on the number of seats conquered by BJP in all the six districts forming part of Udhampur Lok Sabha constituency that is amalgamation of 17 assembly segments. District wise analysis has been undertaken to have clear vision of the failures of Honorable MP and big lot of BJP MLAs in securing seats in ward elections. District Kishtwar: The assembly segment Kishtwar is represented by BJP MLA, Sunil Kumar Sharma, who happened to be MoS with independent charge in coalition government. Kishtwar Municipal election just fetched one seat for BJP of the 13 wards. Doda District: Represented by BJP MLA, Shakti Raj, who happened to be Minister in coalition government whereas in Doda it secured 3 seats of the 17 wards and just one of the 7 wards in Thathri. The Distt Bhaderwah assembly segment represented by BJP MLA Daleep Singh and BJP secured just 3 seats of the 13 wards. Ramban District: Represented by Neelam Kumar Langeh, BJP, MLA but BJP fetched just 2 seats of the 7 in Ramban, and 4 of the 7 wards in Batote. When we speak of Banihal assembly segment represented by Vikar Rasool Wani of INC, BJP came out with big zero in Banihal. Reasi District: Represented by BJP MLA Ajay Nanda, who happened to be minister in coalition government, in Reasi BJP fetched just 6 of the 13 wards although it hit the basic majority of 7 of the 13 wards in Katra. Udhampur District: Udhampur assembly segment represented by Independent MLA Pawan Gupta who happened to be MoS in first spell of coalition government secured just 5 (with one secured by lottery and this cannot be considered as mandated by voters in favor of MLA's candidate) and BJP just 4 of the 21 wards. This speaks that Udhampur has rejected both the political players. The assembly segment Chenani represented by BJP MLA Dina Nath Bhagat secured just 3 of the 7 wards and Ramnagar represented by BJP MLA R S Pathania secured 7 of the 13 wards at the cutting edge majority (with one secured by lottery and this cannot be considered as mandated by voters for BJP). . Kathua District: The Basohli assembly segment represented by BJP stalwart Choudhary Lal Singh, who happened to be heavy weight Cabinet Minister in coalition government, fetched just 5 of the 13 wards. Billawar assembly segment represented by BJP MLA Nirmal Kumar Singh, the then Dy.CM and Speaker in gone by coalition government, fetched just 6 of the 13 seats. Kathua assembly segment represented by BJP MLA Rajiv Jasrotia and a cabinet minister in the then coalition government fetched just 8 of the 21 ward seats and in Lakhanpur just 3 of the 7 seats. The Hiranagar assembly segment represented by Kuldeep Raj of BJP just saved its face by touching the magic figure of 7 of the 13 wards. United BJP in Kishtwar secured 1 of 13 wards, in Doda just 7 of 37, in Ramban 6 of 21, in Reasi 13 of 26, in Udhampur 14 of 41 and in Kathua just 35 of 80 seats. Summing up, out of 218 wards that went to polls in Udhampur Lok Sabha Constituency, BJP just secured 76 wards. Whereas in these wards that went to poll beside BJP MP, there are ten BJP MLAs and only one of INC and one as Independent MLA. The factor of open boycott of ULB elections by NC and PDP have also benefitted the BJP in securing these 76 seats although among number of independent candidates registering their win may have been proxy candidates of these parties and we cannot rule out this possibility. But no open campaign, no party symbol, no banners and no heavy weights in fields of these parties have benefitted the BJP at the large. On the other hand, BJP has used all its resources in campaigning right from minister in the centre, state presidents, MPs, its general secretaries and adjoining MLAs, 'Jaat Paat card', fake commitments 'Ram Janam Bhoomi card', Modi packed voices of 'sab ka saath sab ka vikas' mounted on vehicles moving day night and imploring for votes door to door on Modi's name, sumptuous dinners for voters and what not but all that proved to be unprofitable. Concluding; after reading, studying and getting in touch with the amount of information that I had while I was researching to tailor this article, it just reinforced the belief that performance of Udhampur Lok Sabha MP and all those ten MLAs from BJP is a big flop performed in ULB elections. But come what may, still the words of Eddie Murphy, an American comedian, actor, writer, singer, and producer, "If you have a flop movie, so what? And if you have a hit movie, it's so what, 'too' - it's on to the next movie" i.e. Elections of 2019. Sugar coating things makes people feel better, but it also gives them false hope, and it keeps them holding onto the wrong people. |
