Omar Abdullah bats for stone pelters! | It can't get more bizarre than this | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 29: After boycotting polls and parroting the separatists' statements, National Conference vice president and former J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is now busy defending the stone peters who have virtually put the entire Kashmir Valley at present in trouble. As the stone pelting incidents are witnessing an unprecedented spike in the Valley with attacks on security forces becoming rampant, Omar is coming out in defence of the outlaws, pitching for their safety through the bizarre tweets from his twitter handle. "Let me say this publicly so that Governor Sahib is under no confusion - civilians should not throw stones & should not rush to encounter sites. I'm not saying this publicly for the first time & it won't be the last time I'm saying this," Omar tweeted. "At the same time we can't treat stone throwers as terrorists & randomly keep shooting them but that's a conversation for another day. Right now I'm curious to know how Governor Malik Sb knows what I think privately," Omar added. The statement from the NC leader has come a few days after stone pelters killed an army soldier in south Kashmir and injured many others. Also, the stone pelting which is emerging as a major cause of concern for the security grid is turning Kashmir into a battlefield with violence and pillage dominating the scenes. And amid such a volatile situation, it has put a question mark on NC's strategy that the party now is defending the stone throwers. Pertinently, in 2016, Kashmir witnessed 2690 stone pelting incidents in various districts with Baramulla topping the list with 492 incidents followed by Srinagar and Kupwara each with 339 incidents. The least recorded incidents were 65 in Ganderbal. According to data of the state Home department, north Kashmir saw the highest number of 1,248 incidents followed by 875 incidents in south Kashmir and 567 in central Kashmir. On September 7, 2018, cops in civvies disguised themselves as stone-pelters and mingled among a stone pelting mob in Srinagar, resulting in the successful arrests of repeat stone-pelting offenders. The policemen threw stones as well as used toy guns as part of the disguise. This strategy had previously been used by the police in the region during the 2010 unrest in Kashmir. On October 25, an army soldier was killed after sustaining head injuries in a stone pelting incident in Anantnag district of south Kashmir. The army soldier was identified to be Rajendra Singh, a 22-year-old from Uttarakhand. An army spokesperson said that Sepoy Rajendra was part of a "Quick Reaction Team" that was providing security to a Border Roads Organisation (BRO) convoy. Following the incident Army chief General Bipin Rawat said that stone pelters are like terrorists and must be dealt with sternly, repeating his earlier stand that the stone-pelters are nothing but over ground workers of terror outfits. "I still say the same... If they (stone-pelters) can kill people with such acts, are they not becoming like terrorists. " |
