New Delhi gives nod for major crackdown on corruption in J&K | Netas, Babus under scanner | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Oct 29: Concerned over mounting complaints of "rampant corruption and favoritism" in Jammu and Kashmir, the central and the state governments have decided to go for a major crackdown on corruption. Top sources said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is understood to be personally keen to see "exemplary results" of the crackdown so that the menace comes to end and unleashes a new era of prosperity in the region. Sources said the initiative on crackdown has been taken by New Delhi following complaints of corruption and favoritism as were pitched by the people of the state from time to time during visits of government delegations from the national capital. Sources said the Home Minister Rajnath Singh and interlocutor Dineshwar Sharma who have been frequently visiting the state had found that people had big grievances that over the years New Delhi has been silent over "corruption and favoritism crossing all limits in the state." Sources said during his recent visit to Kashmir, Rajnath Singh held closed-door talks with Governor SP Malik over the issue and to expose the "blacksheep in the system." It was reliably learnt that Governor SP Malik, who is known for integrity and honesty all through his political career, has started working on the project with "no uncle and no sorry policy." Sources said as per preliminary investigations, names of over 300 persons including top officials and politicians have surfaced in the tainted list. Top officials in New Delhi said a main reason to select to SP Malik as the new Governor was that he has been intolerant to corruption and won't spare any indiscipline. "He will be unearthing scams after scams in the coming days. Just wait and watch," said a source privy to the development. Sources in Raj Bhawan said it was part of the same plan that the government recently gave nod for Anti Corruption Bureau in the state. In less than a week of Rajnath Singh having visited Kashmir and discussed the issue of corruption in the state, State Administrative Council on October 25 under the chairmanship of Governor Satya Pal Malik gave its nod for setting up the first-ever Anti-Corruption Bureau in the State to tackle and eradicate corruption in a "more effective and meaningful manner." In a statement that day, the chief secretary BVR Subrahmanyam said the establishment of full-fledged Anti-Corruption Bureau would do away with shortcomings and multiplicity of roles in the existing anti-corruption mechanism operational in the state. Pertinently BVR Subrahmanyam is seen among the most honest and upright officials in the country. |
