Despite holding of Panchayat polls on non-party basis, people at helm want parties to chip in | Things need to be made clear to avoid confusion | | Jehangir Rashid
Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Oct 29: The political establishment of Jammu & Kashmir is creating fuss about an issue that has already been decided with the political parties having no role whatsoever in the whole process. When the bugle was sounded for holding of civic polls and Panchayat elections in the state it was made clear that the elections for local bodies would be held on party basis while as the Panchayat polls would be conducted on individual basis. It was also made clear that the political parties would have no role in the elections for Panchayats in the state. Despite all this the political parties are poking their nose in the Panchayat elections that are scheduled to be held in nine phases in November and December. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh who was on a day long visit to Kashmir valley last week met mainstream political leaders like Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti and urged them to take whole hearted participation in the Panchayat polls. The meeting with Omar and Mehbooba assumed significance in the backdrop of recent developments in the state. Since both National Conference (NC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) boycotted the recently held civic polls, the Home Minister urged leaders of both these parties not to repeat the same in Panchayat polls. This sounds somewhat since the Panchayat elections are held on non-party basis. "It is not expected that the Home Minister is ignorant about the fact that Panchayat polls are being held on individual basis and not party basis. Asking the leaders of leading regional mainstream parties to come out of the boycott and participate in the Panchayat elections is somewhat and one can only laugh over the same," said a group of people while sharing their views with Early Times. It would be in place to mention here that All Jammu & Kashmir Panchayat Conference (AJKPC), an organization of former Panchs and Sarpanchs has been asking the political parties to stay away from Panchayats in Jammu & Kashmir. The Conference has said that politicians should not politicize the institution of Panchayats. 'If the Panchayat elections are being held on non-party basis then why are the political parties creating fuss about the whole process. The people at helm should make the things clear in this regard and the masses would come to know about the exact nature of conduct of Panchayat polls in the state," said the people. People in large number came out to vote during the last Panchayat polls held in 2011 in the state. The tenure of Panchayats ended in 2016, but as no election was held at that time the Panchayats remained without any representative for the past two years or so. |
