Unable to construct 97 KGBVs J&K gets nod for more 29 KGBVs

Early Times Report

Jammu, Jan 30: Notwithstanding the fact that the state government especially the Education Department had virtually failed to construct 97 Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas(KGBVs)- a girls residential school sanctioned decades ago, the Union government has sanctioned 29 more KGBVs for the state.
Sources informed Early Times that the Ministry of Human Resource and Development had sanctioned 97 KGBVs in phase manners to provide educational facilities for girls belonging to scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, other backward classes, minority communities and the families living under below the poverty line in Educationally Backward Blocks worth Rs 25 Lacs for each KGBVs but the state government has virtually failed to complete these buildings.
"The nonchalant attitude of state education department towards the marginalized can be gauged from the fact that despite huge funding by Union government, work on more than half the KGBVs building was yet to start, as a result nearly 50 residential school buildings were operating from make shift arrangements", said sources while wishing anonymity.
They further said that last year in the month of August, 2018, the Union government in the meeting of Project Approval Board had sanctioned 27 more KGBVs for state of Jammu and Kashmir wherein two KGBVs were sanctioned for Bandipora district, five each for Kargil and Kupwara, four for Poonch, three for Budgam and two each for Ganderbal, Ramban and Reasi while one each for Kathua, Srinagar Doda and Anantnag.
"All the 97 KGBVs fall in category Model-I wherein in each residential schools 50 girls students should be enrolled with total sanctioned enrolment of 4850 but against the total enrolment, 2427 seats for girls students were lying vacant in all the operational KGBVs", said sources.
However, the State Project Director had claimed last year that for nearly 30 KGBVs, construction would be commenced soon but the claim proves as mere rhetoric, and girls students of marginalized communities could not get the benefits as envisaged in policy framework.
