Govt also has doubts over quality meals served in schools' | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Jan 30: What could be a serious cause of concern, the government is also doubtful about the poor quality of mid-day meals being served in government schools and has directed all the district development commissioners to monitor the quality of food in the schools. In the recent past several incidents of cooking poor quality meals in unhygienic conditions, inadequate and poor quality infrastructure in kitchen sheds and utensils were rampant in most of the government schools, exposing children to health hazards. Complaints of poor quality rice and vegetables being used to serve Mid-Day Meals to the children in many districts of Jammu and Kashmir where also received by the government. Moreover, all the schools are supposed to have proper kitchen facilities so as to prepare the meals in a hygienic environment; schools in many areas of Srinagar city lack the facilities, causing them to use their classrooms for cooking, serving unhygienic food to the children. In a recent incident in district Doda, Chief Education Officer (CEO) received complaints with regard to the non-serving of mid-day meals in all the five primary and upper primary schools in Tanta panchayat. An official at Divisional Commissioner office said that they have received many complaints that most government schools in Jammu and Kashmir lack proper infrastructure for serving hygienic food to the children. "Taking cognizance of the complaints, the government will constitute a committee that will keep an eye on the quality and quantity of food used for Mid-Day Meals," the official said. As per documents, Divisional Commissioner has directed the District Development Commissioner to constitute a team drawn from Drugs and Food Control Organization and Food Civil Supplies and CA Department to examine the quality of meals served in government schools under Mid-Day Meal Scheme. "The action will be taken by the Director of School Education, Kashmir," reads the document. The Mid- Day Meal scheme was launched in August 1995 to boost the education in children by increasing enrollment, retention and attendance at the same time impacting on the nutrition level of the children. The scheme was extended in 2008-09 to the students of upper primary classes and the scheme is currently operational in 27 states and seven union territories of the country. |
