NC fails to pull supporters for Farooq's rally | | | Ishtiyaq Ahmad
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Apr 9: Srinagar may be considered bastion for the National Conference, but seems to prove that nobody has dominance over the summer capital now. This was proved on Tuesday when less than 200 people turned to listen to National Conference president Farooq Abdullah at Hazratbal Srinagar, where he addressed a gathering. Even the government had closed the Hazratbal market and bus stop, bringing inconvenience to people. "We were expecting that at least 2000 people would attend the rally. But it was a much embarrassment for the National Conference to see most of the seat empty," a National Conference worker said. "It seems every party is losing ground in Srinagar. Even Hazratbal constituency has always been represented by the National Conference by most of the times," the National Conference leader said. The National Conference leader said that party leadership may summon Peer Afaq, Akhoon, for failing to bring supporters for the rally. "If Farooq addresses 200 supporters that is an embarrassment for him," he added. The Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency is scheduled to go polls on April 18 and has 12,90,318 voters who will cast their votes at 1,716 polling stations set up in the constituency. Spanning over three districts-Srinagar, Budgam, and Ganderbal- the constituency has 18 assembly segments. While Farooq, who submitted nomination papers, is joint candidate of the National Conference and Congress, the Peoples Democratic Party has decided to field Aga Syed Mohsin. Since 1967, the National Conference candidates lost only thrice. The National Conference president was earlier declared the winner of the Srinagar Lok Sabha byelection in April 2017. He defeated the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Nazir Khan by 10,766 votes. Earlier, Farooq suffered the first ever defeat of his career in 2014 when he lost to the then PDP's leader Tariq Hamid Karra. The party faced its first defeat in 1971 when Shamim Ahmad Shamim defeated its candidate. Shamim had contested the polls as an Independent candidate. The NC faced its second defeat in 1996, when the Congress candidate Ghulam Mohammad Mir (Magami) emerged win from this parliamentary constituency. While Tariq Hamid Karra, who contested 2014 polls on the PDP ticket, defeated Farooq Abdullah. It rest of elections, the NC candidates emerged winner from Srinagar Lok Sabha seat. Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad won in 1967 parliamentary elections; Begum Akbar Jehan Abdullah represented it twice in 1977, Farooq Abdullah-1980, Abdul Rashid Kabuli-1984, Mohammad Shafi Bhat 1989, Omar Abdullah-1998, 1999, 2004, and Farooq Abdullah-2009 against PDP candidate Iftikhar Ansari. |
