Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Apr 9: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is fast losing its base in the Kashmir valley and the same got proved on Sunday when some of the lower rung leaders of the party faced hostile youth during a protest here.
On Sunday some of the PDP leaders assembled near Lasjan on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway and protested against the government decision to impose ban on civilian traffic on every Wednesday and Sunday of the week.
The PDP leaders led by a former trade union leader faced an embarrassing situation when a youth confronted them and accused the party of adopting double standards. The youth said that PDP leaders have different yardsticks while it is out of power and when in power.
The youth started yelling at the PDP leaders and said that the PDP has no locus standii to hold protest against the government decision banning movement of civilian vehicles on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway.
Sources told Early Times that the PDP has hit the lowest ebb when it comes to the popularity of the party in the state especially Kashmir valley. The party leaders are facing flak from the people in general and more so those who were the die-hard supporters of the party.
"Such was the opposition from the youth that the PDP leaders were forced to leave the venue. The PDP leaders were left wondering and they could carry out the protest only for few minutes. The youth was joined by some other people as well and a full fledged agitation was carried out against the PDP," said sources.
The media persons who were present at the venue left the PDP and started talking to the agitated youth and the other protesters. The youth said that when the PDP was in power everything was good with regards to BJP and the situation changed as soon as the party was out of the power. "It is an established fact that PDP is no more peoples party more so of the people living in the South Kashmir. The party leaders have virtually ditched the people more so those who voted for it in the previous assembly as well as parliament elections," said sources.
Sources said that PDP candidates may feel the heat in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and the assembly elections as and when they are organized. One cannot rule out the defeat of the party president Mehbooba Mufti from the South Kashmir Lok Sabha seat.
