Power, not ideology

Early Times Report

JAMMU, Apr 9: NC vice-president Omar Abdullah and People's Conference chief and former minister Sajad Lone are leaving no stone unturned to expose and corner each other. Omar Abdullah has been accusing Sajad Lone of being an agent of RSS-BJP. He is also trying to create an impression in the Valley that Sajad is a man of agencies - man created to "split Muslim votes" and damage Kashmir and Kashmir cause. He has not only been tearing into Sajad Lone, but also others like Shah Faesal, former bureaucrat, saying they were all working against Kashmir and dividing Muslim votes.
Terming Sajad Lone as an "opportunist", Omar has accused Sajad Lone of flirting with the RSS-BJP for the sake of power. He has asserted that Lone could have become CM with the Support of the RSS-BJP on November 21, 2018, had the state governor not dissolved the assembly and that it was to defeat his aim that the NC, the PDP and the Congress had formed a "grand alliance".
It is a fact that the BJP had offered unqualified support to Sajad Lone and that too in writing, but the Governor had neither invited him nor Mehbooba Mufti to form government in the state. And both Mehbooba and Sajad had accused the Raj Bhawan for not inviting them to form government by making the fax machine at Raj Bhawan non-functional.
The Omar Abdullah's no-holds-barred campaign has outraged Lone. Stung by the attacks and accusations or charges, Sajad Lone on Monday made a startling revelation to expose Omar Abdullah and his lust for power. And he made the startling revelation while addressing a large gathering in Kralpora, Kupwara and Hangah, Langate. He asked Omar Abdullah to tell the people of Kashmir with which national party president was he closeted with for two hours and begged for his support to become CM.
"Omar Abdullah met president of a national party in a high-rise building at Connaught Place, New Delhi after 2014 elections to seek support for becoming CM. If Omar Abdullah has guts, he should reveal the details of his secret meeting. If he doesn't answer my question, we will make the answer public during the rally at Handwara," Sajad on Monday threatened.
Lone Tuesday finally disclosed that Omar tried to stitch an alliance with the BJP to form coalition government with it and his formula was like the one the PDP and the Congress had adopted in November 2002: CM post for the PDP for the first three years and the Congress would hold the office of CM for the remaining three years.
"Former J&K CM and NC vice-president Omar Abdullah had agreed on a rotational CM with the BJP for the Muslim majority State of J&K. Omar met BJP president along with two other persons after 2014 polls for working out power sharing pact in the state. As per the understanding, Omar was to get CM post for three years and BJP for three years. Omar had agreed to BJP's demand for rotational CM," Sajad Lone was quoted as saying. One thing is very clear: Power, not ideology matters in Kashmir. The NC, the PDP and the PC were all critics of the BJP and all shared and enjoyed power with the BJP. Omar Abdullah became minister in the Vajpayee government, Mufti Sayeed and Mehbooba Mufti became CM with the BJP support and the Sajad Lone became minister in the Mufti government out of the BJP quota.
