Jeevan Nagar residents face water, power crisis | Locals narrate woes to Munish Gupta | | Early Times Report Jammu, June 6: Residents of Jeevan Nagar are reeling under severe water scarcity and unscheduled power curtailment that has made their lives miserable. Editor Early Times Munish Gupta, who would contest forthcoming assembly election from Gandhi Nagar Constituency as an Independent candidate, on Thursday conducted extensive tour and door-to-door campaign in Jawahar Nagar, Ward No. 58 and opposite market of Shiksha Niketan School of Jeevan Nagar locality of the Gandhi Nagar Constituency. While carrying his extensive campaign, Munish interacted with people from different walks of life and gave a patient hearing to them. He assured those who have been facing problems for a long time that all the issues would be resolved on priority basis if he is elected from the constituency. During the campaign, a group of women narrated their ordeal to Munish. They told him that from last four months, irregular potable water supply and unscheduled power curtailment have made the lives of thousand people miserable. The worst sufferers are aged persons and children. With mercury touching 45 degrees, the problems of the people have aggravated. "The only tube well of Jeet Nagar, from where PHE department supplies potable water to our locality is not sufficient. We repeatedly requested the local councillor and administration to dig up a new tube well in Jeet Nagar locality so that the overload on Jeet Nagar's Tube well would be reduced. But our all pleas have fallen on dear ears", said locals and added that in Jeet Nagar locality, people are using potable water for gardening, irrigation and other purposes. Bopinder Singh told Munish Gupta that few day back a junior engineer of PHE department namely Neeraj Soodan and AEE, Mr Sharma, visited the locality to take stock of water supply. The locals asked them to restore water supply by changing the four dilapidated pipes, but they said that first they have to make a proposal which would be passed from the department. "On the one hand the department concerned makes tall claims about providing potable water, but on the other side, the officials have no power to change four dilapidated water pipes. It shows how mismanagement has ruined the department", said Ashok Gupta, a shopkeeper. Malla Devi told Munish Gupta that despite having ration card, the depot incharge has denied ration to needy persons who are living here from last 40 years. "Like me there are nearly 50 other family heads who have not been getting ration for a long time. It is a central-sponsored scheme, but the local depot incharge denies the same to us," Devi said. Mohinder Pal, a septuagenarian of Ward No. 58 told Munish that despite being over 70 year, he is not covered under old age pension. He said he even deposited all the relevant documents at Social Welfare Office Amphalla and many a times apprised the local councillor, but to no avail. Another aged person Romesh Chander said he was facing the same problem from last six months. Vijay Mangotra said that since the local councillor Parmjeet Singh Pummy had changed his party and joined BJP in recently held Municipal Corporation elections, he occasionally visits the ward. Hence, most of the street lights have gone defunct and no sanitation drive has been conducted either. The garbage is littered in the lanes as there is no dustbin in the locality, with the result people are dumping garbage in the nearby Ranbir Canal. |
