Forest Deptt wins criticism for failing to act against timber smugglers | | | S Tahir-ul Haq
Early Times Report
BARAMULLA, June 20: Once again the forest department has come under sharp criticism for not tightening its noose against the timber smugglers who are involved in wanton loot of green gold in Baramulla district. Sources told early times that, timber in various areas is being smuggled during night hours, and the department concerned is in a deep slumber as its employees have either given a free hand to smugglers or they are not patrolling during night hours. Few years ago, the upper reaches of Baramulla were covered with green forests and today the once forest area is almost barren. Yes there is an illegal trade of timber and forest fires were witnessed at many places, still the department can make some robust developments, and if they will activate their employees nobody will dare to cut a single tree in the forests, where and whichever area it will be, sources observed. Meanwhile a police team headed by SDPO Rafiabad Shri Nissar Ahmad JKPS along with Range Officer concerned seized huge quantity of timber and deodar worth lacs of rupees from the premises of a house, located at Khudwani Mohlla Ladoora belonging to Riyaz Ahmad Qureshi son of Fayaz Ahmad Qureshi and from the nearby orchards. A case FIR No. 48/2019 under relevant sections of law stands registered in Police Station Panzala and initiated investigations in the matter, said police spokesperson. Pertinently on June 17, the Forest department had seized huge quantity of illicit timber in Rafiabad area of Baramulla district. Naka was laid down at Ferozpora-Achabal link road following inputs, after which a vehicle JK02R-1756 was seized by the Forest Protection Force (FPF) Gamma, unit K-07 Baramulla. The driver of the tipper and his associates had managed to escape from the spot under the grab of darkness. |
