Kashmir's regional parties stay away from World Yoga Day celebrations | | | Early Times Report Jammu, June 21: Even as the International Yoga Day was celebrated across the world, the regional political parties based in Kashmir stayed away from the celebrations as if there was politics behind it. From the National Conference to the Peoples Democratic Party, the local parties from the mainstream didn't even greet the nation on the World Yoga Day. While National Conference President and former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is often seen sharing his gymnasium pictures on the social media, he didn't mind to even perform one act of Yoga in line with the national sentiment. This is despite the fact that the National Conference has as many as three Member Parliaments. "When the world is acknowledging the world yoga day celebrations what prevents such local parties of Kashmir from being part to the celebrations when three of the MPs are from this particular party," asked a political observer. Observers said the local parties should have atleast greeted the nation on the World Yoga Day celebrations. Interestingly while the National Conference and the Peoples Democratic Party are largely seen as Kashmir centric parties, even the Congress party stayed away from the celebrations. This was despite the fact that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi had made it clear that the Yoga was not above individual ideologies. Appealing the people to take yoga to all sections of society, Modi on Friday said yoga is above everything, as he performed various asanas with around 40,000 enthusiasts at the Prabhat Tara ground here to mark the fifth International Day of Yoga. Modi also urged people to make yoga an integral part of life. "We should make efforts to take yoga from cities to villages and tribal areas. Yoga is above religion, caste, colour, gender and region, it is above everything," he told the gathering. The main event for the yoga day was held at the Jharkhand capital. "It (yoga) is constant and evolving for centuries. The essence of yoga has been stable and remained the same -- healthy body, stable mind, spirit of oneness. Yoga has provided a perfect blend of knowledge, karma and bhakti," the prime minister said. Events to mark the day are being held across the globe and in India, several of them are being led by Union ministers, including Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh. |
