Modi govt finally decides to fight television war with Pakistan | 30,000 free dish set-top boxes in J&K | | Early Times Report Jammu, July 1: The Narendra Modi Government has finally decided to fight television war with Pakistan to controvert Islamabad's baneful influence on the people of Jammu & Kashmir living along International Border (IB) between Kathua and Jammu district and Line of Control (LoC). Reports from New Delhi said that the "Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has launched a major programme to install 30,000 free Doordarshan (DD) dish set-top boxes in 10 border districts along the International Border and Line of Control (LoC)". The dish antennas and set top boxes will provide access to as many as 100 channels free of cost, including local news channels. It will help Government of India counter television war unleashed by Pakistan. The development has come up in the light of observation that "in many of these areas, people can easily access Pakistani television channels from across the border but not Indian". People living along IB and LoC have explained: "We use dish antennas. We easily access channels from across the border. Pakistani serials are very popular with the population closer to the LoC". "There are undesirable channels, not approved by the Ministry, being received and watched in Jammu and Kashmir. Strategically the move will help us to reach out to people with a better alternative," a senior Doordarshan official was quoted as saying It bears recalling that the programme was kick started on 22 June by the Jammu & Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik. He, along with Union I&B Minister Prakash Javadekar, distributed the first batch of set-top boxes in Srinagar. They termed the initiative "a major milestone towards reaching out to the local populace in the far-flung and border areas". |
