Early Times Report Jammu, July 30: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti faced embarrassment today when both the Rajya Sabha members of her partyabstained from the House when voting was going on Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019popularly known as Triple Talaq Bill. Despite being dumped by the BJP, a group within PDP seems to be keeping its options open for an electoral alliance with the Saffron party by deciding to abstain during voting on Triple Talaq Bill which is opposed by entire opposition. Shockingly PDP president Mehbooba appeared to be unware of the fact that her party members have indirectly supported the Bill was not voting against it. As per Rajya Sabha record at 6.03 this evening just before the voting PDP's Rajya Sabha members namely Fayaz Mir Mohammad and Nazir Ahmed Laway walked out of the House. And at 7:55 pm, Mehbooba Mufti tweeted, "Fail to understand the need to pass the triple talaq bill especially since the Supreme Court had already declared it illegal. Undue interference seemingly to punish Muslims. Given the Omar takes dig at PDP president current state of the economy, should this really have been a priority?" Credible sources said that after skipping foundation day function at Srinagar on July 28, both the Rajya Sabha members of PDP had given clear indications to the party leadership that they were not happy with the party leadership. National Conference leader and former chief minister Omar Abdullah was quick to respond to Mehbooba Mufti's tweet. He lashed out at Mufti and asked her to check with her party members who voted on this bill. "Mehbooba Mufti ji, you might want to check how your members voted on this bill before tweeting. I understand they abstained which helped the government with the numbers needed to pass the bill. You can't help the government & then fail to understand need to pass", tweeted Omar Abdullah. The Bill was passed by 99 votes in favour and 84 against, as the ruling NDA, which lacks majority in the Upper House, was also helped by the absence of some members of the opposition Congress, SP and BSP as well as six members of Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) and two MPs of YSR-Congress. |
