Grit & Determination: Disabled man rides auto rickshaw for a living | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Aug 31 : Tarsem Pal Bali of Ashok Nagar locality in Satwari area of Jammu was not ready to give up on life though an accident left him disabled when he was just five-year-old. He fought back and started to lead a life like any other physically fit person albeit his earnings are too meager to fend himself and his family. The 53-year-old has been earning a living by riding an auto rickshaw for the past twenty years. Bali is looking after his family comprising his wife and two daughters with whatever money earned through the rented auto rickshaw he operates. The other source of income of the family is the Rs 1000 disability pension received by Bali on monthly basis. "I don't want to beg for help from anybody. That's why I learned driving and started to drive a mini bus for at least 12 years. After that I began driving an auto rickshaw for living though I also tried hard to get a job but unable to get," said Bali. He may or may not get support from others in his fight to survive but he is ever ready to help anybody by donating blood to the needy that come his way. "I am a regular blood donor and have donated blood as many as fifty five times. Donating blood gives me immense satisfaction. If a small effort of mine could save a life, I am more than eager to do it without any hesitation," said Bali. Ironically, his wife Anita Bali is also a handicap but she is not entitled to get a disability pension to support her family as she is only 25 percent disable. "My wife used to get the disability pension but the authorities concerned stopped the same since last 5-6 years citing that a person having disability of 35 percent or more is eligible to receive the monetary benefit," said Bali, choked with emotions. "As my income is not sufficient to make both ends meet, I see a ray of hope in my daughters, who are studying in a private school. They are bright and intelligent but need support to achieve something big in life. I appeal to the government to provide a suitable job to my eldest daughter who has recently passed her 12th class," Bali added. |
