IIMC Jammu organizes Fact Checking Workshop | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Oct 1: Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), Jammu today organized a workshop on online verification and fact checking under Google News Initiative. The workshop, attended by the students and faculty of Jammu campus, was conducted by Assistant Professor, Archana Kumari of Central University Jammu. She has been an alumnus of IIMC Delhi and was a former faculty at Central university of Bihar and Central University of Kashmir. The program was presided over by the Regional Director IIMC Jammu, Manohar Khajuria. The workshop was mainly targeted towards the advent of internet and how to check the rise of fake news. Archana said "the epidemic of fake news has given rise to a number of lynching cases and various criminal activities around the country. "Cheap data plans are creating a vast pool of internet users who are unable to distinguish between fake and real news", as such, the media fraternity should be more cautious she added. Fact checking expertise has become a source of employment in various media houses now a days. Accordingly, the budding journalists should devote attention to this aspect as well. Students were made aware about various hazards of fake news through means of pictures, videos, profiles, websites and location. They were told about the ways to counter fake news through various hacks and tools present on the Google Chrome extension and various applications available online. During interaction, queries of the students regarding various cases of fake news were answered. |
