Govt offers facilities for graveyards, crematoriums in Srinagar, forgets Jammu! | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 26: In a major initiative, the Jammu and Kashmir government has started a program to offer upgradation of civic and infrastructural facilities at graveyards and cremation grounds in the summer capital of Srinagar whereas no such plan seems to be in place for Jammu, the city apparently neglected for decades. Official documents reveal that the Srinagar Municipal Corporation is offering upgradation of civic facilities at the graveyards and cremation grounds in the city. The civic body has come up with public notification asking the managing committees of all the graveyards and cremation grounds in Srinagar city to seek free of cost installation of infrastructure like streetlights, fencing, sunshades and cremation sheds as and where required by people belonging to various communities. The management committees of the graveyards and the cremation grounds have been asked to approach the concerned offices including that of Ward Officers to file their applications in prescribed formats for deliverance of the facilities. Sources said the money will be spend on such upgradation out of special funds given by the government. While the aspirant committees have started the process in Srinagar, no such proposal seems to be underway for the city of temples - Jammu. As if the allegations of discrimination with Jammu for decades were not enough, for the past around three months, since the abrogation of the special status of the erstwhile state on August 5, Srinagar city has been seemingly getting "extra but undue attention of the government in the form of special incentives." Around two months ago, the government released special funds to tune of around Rs 15 crores for the councilors of SMC for developmental activities in their respective wards. No such special funds were, however, sanctioned for Jammu. This is despite the fact that Jammu city has been welcoming the abrogation of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir whereas the Kashmir province in general and Srinagar in particular has been observing hartal since August 5, much in tune with the separatist sentiment. A senior official in the Housing and Urban Development department, however, downplayed the matter saying that similar initiative would be in the offing for Jammu city as well. |
