Early Times Report

Jammu, Mar 19: The Central Government as well as the Jammu and Kashmir administration have taken several measures to avoid social gatherings but no direction has been issued for the safety of industrial workers.
As per the latest guidelines issued by the J&K administration, several measures have been put in place to avoid gatherings in educational institutions, restaurants, bars, wine shops, food joints, shops, shopping malls and cinema halls. Public transport has also been suspended. However, huge gatherings are still continuing in the industries and factories in various industrial areas in Jammu region.
Industrial workers ranging from 100 to 10,000 have been engaged in small, medium and large scale industrial units in various areas. The workers have reportedly been working as per the past practices and no concrete precautionary measures have been taken by the owners for their safety.
“The industrial workers have to perform their duties in difficult conditions. During breaks and during off hours they gather inside or outside the premises of factories. Are they not prone to COVID- 19 threat?” asked a functionary of industrial workers union.
He said that these workers were actually the most gullible and most vulnerable to the infection as they work in very difficult conditions.
Another union leader said, “The rich people can easily avail the facilities of N95 masks and sanitizers but majority of the workers can’t take such precautions as they are too poor to afford such expensive items.”
“It is quite strange that huge gatherings are being allowed in the industries. This could prove detrimental for entire population as everyone is interconnected,” the leader said and added that the government should either direct the owners of the industrial units to take some precautionary steps for safety of the workers or announce shutting down of the industries without the owners deducting their wages as that would push them to the brink of starvation.
