Despite assurance from government people associated with essential services get beaten up | Milk vendors, vegetable sellers allege harassment on roads | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Mar 26: Despite assurance from the government that people associated with essential services would be allowed free movement the situation on the ground is different with complaints of obstruction pouring in from different areas of Kashmir valley. Reports reaching here said that people associated with supply of essentials of life like milk and vegetables were stopped at many places by police and security forces and were not allowed to supply the things to the general public. Some of these vendors were beaten up in Srinagar, its outskirts and different districts. In many areas of Srinagar, the summer capital of union territory of Jammu & Kashmir the police personnel enforced lockdown of the shops selling milk and vegetables to the people. As a result of this the common masses had to suffer since the essentials of life were not available to them. “In the early morning I was able to sell milk to some of the people, but later on I could not do so. As I was busy in my work some of the police personnel turned up at my shop and asked me to shut down. When I told them I am selling an essential of life, I received kicks and butts from the personnel in return,” Ghulam Mohammad (name changed) a milk vendor told Early Times. Abdul Hameed (name changed) a vegetable seller said that he could not open his vegetable shop located in one of the posh localities of Srinagar city. Hameed said that as he saw some of the police personnel beating up a milk vendor he decided against opening his shop in the early hours of the day. The people associated with the supply of Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) to the consumers also alleged that they were beaten up while they were discharging their duties. They said given the harassment on the roads it is not possible for them to supply LPG cylinders in the different parts of Srinagar. “There is too much of harassment on the roads and we cannot work in such a situation. We risk our own lives to ensure that a gas cylinder is delivered at the doorsteps of the common people. However, the men in uniform on the roads and streets are beating us and as such it is better to sit at home among our family members,” said Mushtaq Ahmad (name changed) an LPG vendor. A driver of Road Transport Corporation (RTC) was stopped and beaten up by the forces personnel while he on his way to supply ration to a ration depot in the Srinagar city. The driver pleaded with the personnel but all his pleas fell on deaf ears following which he was beaten up. “The driver was assigned with the responsibility of supplying food grains to a depot in Srinagar so that the same could be distributed later on among the people. However, he was beaten to the pulp and as such the ration could not reach the designated ration depot,” said an employee of Food Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs department. Reports received from some other districts said that milk vans and vegetable vans were not allowed free movement within the district with the people being ultimate sufferers. It has also come to the fore that many milk vendors and vegetable vendors were not allowed to enter the limits of Srinagar district from different districts.
