'VIP' market defies orders on closure, remains open in Srinagar
3/26/2020 10:40:10 PM

Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Mar 26: In a major violation of the government orders directing for closure of all shops and marketplaces in the wake of coronavirus, the market at Sanat Nagar locality here has been functioning normally.
The shops remain open despite the orders of the Jammu and Kashmir government on restrictions on the public movement in the wake of some people having tested positive for corona in Kashmir.
Sources said the market remains open "as many VIPs live in the area." "These shopkeepers enjoy patronage of some VIP people including politicians and officials living in the area and thus nobody dares to touch them for any wrongdoing," said a resident of the area complaining that by remaining open the market has risked the lives of the inhabitants.
A doctor living in the area said it was the responsibility of the government to have ensured that the market remained shut. "But the problem is that this market enjoys so much of influence that it remains open even in curfews," said the doctor living in the area.
Sources said there are also no timings for the market to remain open. "Some of the shops remain open till midnight," the locals said.
A senior official said the complaint about the area has come to their notice time and again. "Whenever administration tries to act against the offenders they have to succumb to pressures from the VIPs," admitted an official on the condition of anonymity.
Ironically, the police and the Srinagar Municipal Corporation also have been silent on the issue.
When contacted a senior official said that the complaint in this regard has come to their notice.
"We recently asked them to close the shops, if they have opened it again then we'll have to look into it. No indiscipline will be tolerated," the official said.
