Village Lovely reeling under water crisis, Jal Shakti Dept in deep slumber | | | GURDAS KUMAR EARLY TIMES REPORT
SAMBA, May 2: The residents of remote village Lovely in district Samba has been reeling under water crisis for the last fifteen days but the Jal Shakti Department formerly Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department is not paying any attention towards the emerging situation. Villagers told Early Times that village Lovely, which is situated in remote hilly area has been facing acute water shortage for the last couple of weeks particularly during COVID-19 lockdown but the PHE department has not taken note of the problem till date to provide relief to the locals. “With no water supply for the last more than weeks, the entire village having population of around 500-600 souls is forced to consume contaminated water. The villagers have no option other than taking water from traditional sources like well or pond, which are rarely used and cleaned. As a result residents are likely to fall prey to many water borne diseases,” said Ram Lal, and few other residents of village Lovely. They further said that mere changing nomenclature of PHE Department to Jal Shakti will not serve the purpose until its functioning is not improved in real sense. “Change in name will not improve anything. Working of the department needs a complete overhaul. The supply pipeline has problem of leakage at many points, due to which maximum water get wasted before reaching houses, however, department ignores such irregularities. We have lodged complaint to PHE Dept in this regard but no action has been taken so far,” said a resident, Asha Rani adding, sarcastically, that with no water supply at all to the village for the last 15 days it looks like as if the problem of water wastage has been solved by the department but only till the water supply is restored. |
