Woman tests Covid positive posthumously in Anantnag, family contests claim | | | SAAHIL SUHAIL Early Times Report
ANANTNAG, July 14: A 60 year old woman from South Kashmir’s Anantnag district had tested positive for coronavirus after her death however her family contested the official claim and said the deceased wasn’t sampled for COVID-19. Deceased, Raja Begum, a resident of Sarnal Anantnag, was admitted in Government Medical College Anantnag last Friday with respiratory issues. “Oxygen level of mother (deceased woman) were low so we decided to admit her at GMC Anantnag,” Mohd Iqbal Najar, deceased lady’s son told Early Times, adding her mother was treated for over 24 hours in the hospital and she died on Saturday (11th of July). “Before the death of my mother they asked us to fill a form but they never took her sample in our presence,” he claimed. Iqbal said that the hospital authorities even handed over the body to the family and didn’t convey that the deceased was to be buried as per the COVID-19 protocol. “They (Hospital authorities) provided us an ambulance as we couldn’t arrange a private cab and didn’t convey anything to us. We laid her to rest as the religious rites and hundreds of people attended her funeral prayers,” he added. He said that they left stunned after they came to know that their mother has tested positive for coronavirus posthumously. Demanding a probe into the incident, the family asked GMC Anantnag authorities to prove that they had sampled the deceased woman. “They must dig out the CCTV footage and prove that they had sampled my mother and if they had why they didn’t convey us the same,” he said. Iqbal said that the health department hasn’t yet sampled the family members or relatives which expose their claim related to his mother. Medical Superintend GMC Anantnag, Dr Majid Mehrab on being contacted told early Times that the deceased woman was sampled as per the norms and had tested positive posthumously He said that the body of the deceased woman was handed over to the family as per the covid19 protocol and the family was asked to follow the norms particularly during the burial. “We can’t retain the dead bodies,” he said.
