| Mendhar-Poonch road in shambles, GREF continues to ignore blacktopping | | |  M S NAZKI

POONCH, July 21: A strong resentment is brewing among the residents here against failure of the authorities to undertake repair of several roads connecting Mendhar town with other places in Poonch, particularly the stretch leading to the district headquarter.
Almost all the interior roads of Mendhar town of Poonch district are in dilapidated condition, resulting into major inconvenience to general public.
The condition of the roads is so bad that most of the motorists have stopped to ply their vehicles on these awful stretches.
People demanded repair and blacktopping of all the roads especially Mendhar-Poonch road which is in a dilapidated state near Dhakki Petrol Pump.
“This road connects several villages. It is the main road which leads to Sakhi Maidan, Mankote, Uchhad and Krishna Ghati to Poonch,” informed people.
“The Mendhar-Poonch road at many places including Dhakki Bridge and near Shaheed Sepoy Layqat Ali Petrol Pump is dotted with potholes posing risk of accidents,” they alleged.
The locals said the General Reserve Engineer Force (GREF) has failed to undertake even minor repairs of the vital road. On the other side, the local panchayat collects toll tax from the vehicles passing through the road maintained by the GREF.
“Government should stop collection of toll tax till repairs of the road is undertaken” said spokesperson, Civil Society Mendhar.
Stressing immediate repair of the road, the civil society members said if the GREF failed to undertake immediate repairs, they will launch an agitation against it. Meanwhile, the Taxi Union has also expressed concern over the bad condition of the road saying it has drastically affected their business.
President said the public transport owners have hiked fare rates due to bad condition of the road as their vehicles are unable to bear the wear and tear caused by the pot-holed roads.
