Kupwara records 63.80% turnout in final phase of DDC polls
Need to focus on developmental issues, say voters

KUPWARA, Dec 19: In the final phase of DDC election, the developmental issues remain on top for the voters while Kupwara district of north Kashmir recorded highest polls with 63.80% on Saturday.
According to the official figures, the total poll percentage for the eighth phase of DDC election was recorded as 29.91% in Kashmir valley on Saturday.
The highest poll percentage for eighth phase was recorded in Kupwara district with 63.80%, followed by Bandipora with 56.56% and simultaneously Baramulla district recorded poll percentage with 44.60%.
Due to the cold weather, little enthusiasm was seen at the beginning at the polling stations as the voting began at 7 am today, after which a huge number of voters were seen at various polling booths across north Kashmir.
Voter from Singhpora area of Baramulla district said that, "our main aim of casting votes is to see the development be it of a road, electricity, water or some other issues pertaining to development, adding we have been ignored by the previous governments, and now there is a need to focus on developmental issues".
Meanwhile, it is learnt from sources that an Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) trooper deployed on election duty suffered a massive heart attack today in north Kashmir's Hajjin village.
On duty ITBP trooper suffered a massive heart attack and fell unconscious on ground, after which he was rushed to nearby hospital in a critical condition for advanced treatment.
The ITBP trooper was identified as Ajay of 18 Bravo Company. The official was on election duty at Halwara area of Hajjin.
Meanwhile, State Election Commissioner (SEC), K K Sharma Saturday said that people's participation and peaceful conduct of eight phased elections is explicitly showing that people of Jammu and Kashmir have reaffirmed their faith in democracy and democratic setup.
The State Election Commissioner said this during his visit to DDC Constituency Wavoora in district Kupwara today.
The SEC said that the polling and electoral process remained successful in Jammu & Kashmir and people voted enthusiastically, adding that about 40% voter turnout was registered in Kashmir valley during the last 7 phases.
He said the objective of the State Election Commission was to conduct free and fair elections which, he added, was committed with the people's participation and hard-work of government functionaries.
The SEC visited 2 polling stations viz Potushai and Wavoora, where 220 out of 453 and 380 out of 505 voters cast their votes till 12 noon respectively
