Will Congress succeed to woo back disgruntled Azad? | Sonia Gandhi rolls out programme to tame rebels, Azad tops list | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Dec 19: Amid the pacification measures being taken by the Congress high command in New Delhi to woo the rebels back into the fold, the million dollar question remains whether it will succeed in getting Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad back into the tent. The outcome of the process is likely to have a drastic impact upon Jammu and Kashmir’s political woods. Sources within the Congress party divulged that the ongoing process by the Congress high command is crucial vis-à-vis the political scenario of Jammu and Kashmir as if the reconciliatory process fails to yield results, its outcome is going to have a drastic impact here at large. It was informed that Azad still enjoys quite a support within the Congress ranks in Jammu and Kashmir and can have a major say in political affairs of the party. If Azad bids adieu to the Congress and joins some other political group, the Congress could very much find itself in disarray. Earlier within the Congress party there were speculations rife that Azad may have been disgruntled due to his juniors calling the shots within the party in Jammu and Kashmir and his opinion not being taken into consideration by anyone there. Azad, in an interview to a news agency on November 23 said that the Congress party’s ‘structure’ has collapsed and needs to be rebuilt by having elected leaders from the block to the Congress Working Committee (CWC) level and enforce accountability in the system. He added that a five-star culture had seeped into the party and candidates first checked into a luxury hotel after getting a party ticket to contest an election. “Our party’s structure has collapsed. We need to rebuild our structure and then if any leader is elected in that structure, it will work. But to say that just by changing the leader we will win Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh etc. is wrong. That will happen once we change the system. Until we change our way of functioning at every level, things won’t change,” he said. Azad who has also served as the chief ministers for more than two years from 2005 to 2008 in Jammu and Kashmir demanded restoration of statehood. He highlighted how JK in spite of being one of the largest states in India was downgraded to a union territory without any compunction. Earlier, Early Times reported on December 14 that Congress party had meticulously omitted out its veteran leader Ghulam Nabi Azad from the poll posters, revealing how relations between him and the party are turning sultrier with each passing day. On the poll posters, there were pictures of Sonia Gandhi, Rajni Patel, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Dr Manmohan Singh, JKPCC chief GA Mir and the candidates contesting the polls. However, what was missing for the very first time was the picture of former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad. |
