EARLY TIMES REPORT

SRINAGAR, Jan 27: The municipal committee has failed to identify suitable land for the proper dumping of the garbage’s and other non-biodegradable items, with the result people as well as the concerned department dumps the same on roadsides that poses threat to the elderly persons and children in Ganderbal district.
“The concerned department has failed to identify the land for dumping of garbage and other non-biodegradable items due to which it poses threat to the elderly persons, especially women and children during evening hours, ‘’ said Nisar Ahmad of Beehama Ganderbal.
He said that, the garbage collected by the Municipal committee Ganderbal is dumped near Beehama and power house Ganderbal, the garbage is scattered everywhere on the roadsides that poses threat to the people during evening hours.
The garbage was dumped in the open space along the highway near Beehama, which has become a nuisance, now the same has got buried under the recent snowfall, said a local resident of Beehama.
According to him many times they have taken up this issue with the concerned authorities but they have failed to identify any suitable land for the proper dumping of the garbage in the district, adding earlier it was dumped near Safapora that is just a few kilometers away from Mansbal Lake.
With the dumping of garbage in an open space is a threat to flora and fauna, it can cause other hazardous environmental issues.
“It generally produces toxins, like dioxins as it is burning. With the dumping of garbage in an open space, it can pollute the air, besides this it is a threat to the environment that is why we are witnessing global warming”, said Bashir Ahmad, a local resident of Ganderbal.
He said that the irony of the fact is that during early morning and evening hours, people cannot walk freely as there remains a threat of stray dogs, the dogs prowl around the area in search of food, and they pose a threat to the locals.
“The piled up garbage emanates foul smell and has become a health hazard for the people.
It also attracts dogs, and other cattle. Despite knowing all these issues, the department concerned has failed to move and clean the district every day”, locals informed early times.
However, a senior official of the Municipal department said that due to fresh snow, we could not remove the garbage from roadside, but yes possibly tomorrow we will press the men and machinery into service so that it will not create further problems to the locals.
