GCW Parade hosts webinar to mark World Epilepsy Day

JAMMU, Feb 8: A webinar on the topic ‘Epilepsy is A Disease, Not A Curse and is Treatable’ was today organized by Government College for Women, Parade Ground in collaboration with B L Kapoor Hospital, New Delhi & Global Helping Hand, Jammu to mark the observance of World Epilepsy Day.
Eminent Neurologist, Professor (Dr) Man Mohan Mehndiratta, Senior Director - Neurology, BLK Centre for Neurosciences, BLK Super Specialty Hospital- New Delhi shared the screen as the resource person.
Through his lucid deliberation on the theme ‘Epilepsy Is A Disease, Not A Curse And Is Treatable’, he explained that epilepsy (‘Mirgi’ in Hindi) is a brain disorder and most common disorder of the central nervous system. “Unfortunately, due to lack of awareness, people with epilepsy have lot of negative perception about the disease, they are often misunderstood by others, and experience stigma. It is important to provide accurate information about the cause, risk factors to the people with epilepsy and their families” he added. He also spoke about the roles of schools, colleges and community at large in dealing with myths and misconception that prevail, and also mentioned the appropriate ways of taking first hand care of people having epilepsy.
The program was moderated by Assistant Professor/Clinical Psychologist, and Convener Psychological Counseling Cell, GCW, and Parade Dr. Piyali Arora. She also talked about the importance of psychotherapy in dealing with anxiety and depression among people with epilepsy and importance of psychotherapy along with pharmacotherapy in the treatment of this disorder. Several questions came up from the participants which were well responded to by the resource person.
President Global Helping Hand, Sri JK Raina (Reshi, Colonel Sheetal Singh, Chief Patron and Patron and Principal GCW, Parade Ground, Professor (Dr) S.P Sarswat, appreciated the speakers and the insight the event generated among the listeners. They congratulated Global Helping Hands, Jammu, the organizers and collaborators for successfully carrying out health mission, "Aarogyaka Abhishek" for making people aware of various diseases and disorders that concern people in the community.
Organizers Initiator/Director, GHH, Sri Yoginder Kaul; Dr K.K. Kitchlu, Col. Ravi Dhar, Er. Parneesh Mahajanwere were also present on the occasion. The webinar received an overwhelming response from the participants.
