PAGD faces defeat, Irfan Panditpuri elected as DDC Chairperson Kupwara | | | S Tahir-ul Haq Early Times Report
BARAMULLA, Feb 8: The election for the post of DDC chairperson has been adjourned due to lack of prescribed quorum in this north Kashmir district and new date for the process has been rescheduled, while as PC and independent won DDC and VC posts respectively in Kupwara district. The meeting regarding election for DDC chairperson and vice-chairperson in Baramulla that was scheduled today was adjourned due to lack of prescribed quorum. According to District Election Officer Baramulla Mohammad Aijaz Asad, out of 14 DDC members only seven members were present. Further DEO has issued a fresh notification in accordance with the sub-rule (6) of 108-ZN of Jammu and Kashmir Panchayat Raj Rules, 1996 wherein the said election for the office bearers shall now be conducted on 13th of February, 2021 in Dak Bungalow at 11:00 am. Meanwhile, in light of extant Rules in place, DEO has also cautioned that action, under rules, shall be initiated against any DDC member who remains absent from the meeting scheduled on above mentioned date. Pertinent to mention that, rules in this regard empower DEO to initiate action against those members who fail to attend subsequent meetings, said DEO Baramulla. However, according to sources, the DDC elected members from PC, Apni Party and two independent candidates were present in the meeting. The members from PDP, NC, Congress and one independent candidate abstained from election process Meanwhile J&K People’s Conference won the DDC chairperson post in Kupwara district while the vice-chairperson post was won by an independent candidate, who was also backed by PC. Irfan Panditpuri of PC was unanimously elected as chairperson of DDC Kupwara during an election meeting held in the district to elect chairperson and vice-person. They said that out of the total 13 DDC members, only 9 members participated in the election meeting while the remaining 4 members belonging to PAGD remained absent from the meeting. “Of these 9 members PC had 5 members of their own while they also got the support of remaining 4 members and subsequently it paved the way for PC to get the key post of chairperson in Kupwara,” they said. Haji Mohammad Farooq, who was associated with the Congress party, had contested the DDC election as an independent candidate and was declared winner. Pertinently, one block in the district remained vacant as the counting of votes was halted by the election commission due to the participation of a Pakistani woman in the DDC election from this block. |
