Jammu, Feb 15: After imposing toll tax on the people of Jammu, the BJP is going to give another gift to the residents in the name of property tax. The property tax will be levied on all lands and buildings or vacant lands or both that fall within the jurisdiction of civic body areas unless exempted under this act or any other law. Since morning an official notification has been viral in the social media regarding imposition of property tax in J&K. Notable officers of the concerned departments have neither contradicted the viral notification nor confirmed it. Despite repeated attempts most of the officers preferred to maintain silence on this issue. As per the viral notification, “S.O 49. In exercise of the powers conferred by the Jammu and Kashmir Property Tax Board Act, 2013, the Jammu and Kashmir Municipal Act, 2000 and the Jammu and Kashmir Municipal Corporation Act, 2000, the government hereby direct that for the levy of property tax on any land or buildings, the value of land as notified in terms of Jammu and Kashmir Preparation and Revision of Market Value Guideline Rules 2011 (Circle rate) shall be a key determinant of the value of the property apart from the nature of construction, the kind of use, the age of property, or any other relevant consideration”. Pertinent to mention here that earlier in the month of October 2020, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had empowered the UT administration to impose the property tax following an amendment to the J&K Municipal Act, 2000 and J&K Municipal Corporation Act, 2000 through the J&K Reorganisation (Adaption of State Laws) order, 2020. It was all due to opposition by the political parties, the proposal to impose property tax was kept in abeyance. |
