No clue of one crore allocated in 2019-2020 for setting up of drug de-addiction centre at JVC Bemina | Many a slip between cup and the lip as huge amount ‘vanishes’ in thin air | | Jehangir Rashid
Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Mar 15: The menace of drug addiction has spread its tentacles across the union territory of Jammu & Kashmir and time and again the people at helm have been stressing on the need to construct drug de-addiction centres for the people who have fallen in this trap. However, on ground the situation is different with very little focus being laid on setting up drug de-addiction centres across the centre. The best example in this regard is Jhelum Valley College (JVC) Bemina also known as Sher-I-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Medical College, Bemina. In the budget for the financial year 2019-2020, the government of Jammu & Kashmir had allocated an amount of one crore for the setting up of drug de-addiction at JVC Bemina. Two years down the lane there is no clue of the money allocated in this regard with the drug de-addiction centre yet to come at the medical college and hospital? Sources told Early Times that the money seems to have ‘vanished’ in thin air since not a single penny has been located due to which the drug de-addiction centre could not come up so far. They said the people at helm have not bothered to keep a track of things even though there is no clue of whopping amount of one crore. “It is the duty of the government or the administration to keep a track of the allocations made in the annual budget. In this particular case no follow up was taken up due to which nobody knows where the money meant for setting up the drug de-addiction centre has gone,” said sources. Sources said the administration of Jammu & Kashmir should keep this in mind while making the budget allocation for the health sector for the financial year 2021-2022. They said since the drug addiction has afflicted the society in the entire union territory it is imperative drastic steps are taken to tide over the crisis. “Mere lip service would not lead to any fruitful result while dealing with a societal issue like drug addiction. The administration needs to be proactive in this regard and as such they should probe where has the amount meant for setting up the de-addiction centre at JVC Bemina gone,” said sources. It would be in place to mention here that the High Court has time and again reprimanded the erstwhile state government for its failure to stop the drug addiction in Jammu & Kashmir. The High Court has been directing the people at helm to set up drug de-addiction centres so that proper rehabilitation of drug addicts takes place. |
