Politicians In Dilemma | | | Delimitation Commission getting one year extension in Jammu and Kashmir is an indication that assembly polls in the newly carved out union territory won't be held in 2021. Politicians will have to wait till the exercise gets completed. The delimitation will end the discrimination with Jammu as both Jammu and Kashmir regions will have equal number of assembly seats. Till 2019 Kashmir had more assembly seats and Jammu less. There are reports that parliamentary delegation is likely to visit J&K in coming days to discuss the possibility of holding the elections if the Delimitation Commission submits its report within a few months then the elections could be held within this year also. The big issue at present for the politicians is whether J&K would get its statehood back or not. If the statehood is restored then politicians will be all powerful but if it doesn't happen then the political leaders will have to work with the curtailed powers. Till August 5, 2019-when the Centre announced its decision to abrogate J&K's special status and bifurcated it into two union territories-politicians had all the powers but after J&K's transition into a union territory situation has changed. If the elections are held in J&K UT the politicians won't have a final say as the Lieutenant Governor will be the boss and his decision will be final. In the changed scenario, Kashmir centric leaders, have lost their relevance. Former chief ministers, Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti have stated that they won't contest the assembly elections. It's a hint that for them also restoration of statehood is important. Their assertions that they want Article 370 to back is nothing but a drama aimed at remaining politically relevant. Whenever, the assembly elections are held after delimitation exercise gets completed it will be for the first time in 70-years that there is a possibility about Dogra from Jammu region will get a chance to become the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir. Till August 5, 2019, only Kashmiri politicians had the privilege to hold the highest office in the state, but after J&K's transition into a union territory these politicians are not in a position to dictate terms to anyone. They will have to remain content with what they will get they are in no position to demand. Things have changed and the time only will decide how these leaders will fit in new scheme of things. |
