GURDAS KUMAR Early Times Report VIJAYPUR, Mar 16: Raya Lift Irrigation Scheme here has failed to serve its purpose to provide water to farmers for irrigation, locals have alleged. They said that the project was started in 1980 and farmers were happy that they would get water for irrigating their fields in the Kandi area. The scheme was inaugurated in 2004 by the then Chief Minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed and concerned MLA Manjeet Singh, as per proposed scheme hundreds of acres of land was to be irrigated through the scheme. "There is no continuous water supply. The canal has developed cracks at many places, which is the main cause of water leakage," they alleged. Raghuveer Singh, a resident of village Raya said that due to non-availability of water, the new generation is not interested in farming and most of the agricultural land has been sold off. He said that crores were spent on the irrigation scheme but the "money has gone down the drain as the scheme has failed to serve the purpose," Singh added. |
