EARLY TIMES REPORT

UDHAMPUR, Apr 21: An NGO ‘Environment Awareness Forum’ has alleged that the water flowing from some tubes constructed by Konkan Railway Corporation, Patel Construction Company and other companies working on the rail project near Katra is polluting Pai rivulet. The Forum said that garbage and untreated polluted water is being allowed to get into Pai rivulet resulting in death of some fishes in the stream earlier and also that of the livestock consuming the water of the rivulet. Apart from this, the extracted material has been dumped into Pai thereby affecting its normal flow.
Bhushan Parimoo, president of Environment Awareness Forum told Early Times, “We wrote the same to the Member Secretary, JK Pollution Control Board and other concerned authorities after residents of Kotli Mangotrian approached us.” He claimed that a team of experts drawn from various fields visited the spot called Saidh Dabri, near Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine where from stream Pai emerges and directly flows down from the holy feet of Goddess.
The rivulet reaches Nao Devian Pindi and falls in Ghar Panchayat to another shrine called Baba Dhansar. An irrigation canal called Pai Canal is also taken out from the rivulet that irrigates a vast area in Bhabbar Panchayat and is a source of water for humans and livestock, he added.
When contacted, Project Manager Patel Construction Company, Shakeel said that they have been working in the area for the last four years and there is involvement of the use of chemicals. However, he said that when some vehicles pass through the rivulet they may make the water turbid but still they are looking into the matter.
