Why Covid patients avoid hospitals for treatment? | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 21: Unlike other parts of the country, Covid patients in J&K prefer home isolation instead of going to hospitals for treatment because peoples’ experience during the first wave of the deadly virus was very bad when some patients had lost their lives due to the non-availability of oxygen. Over 85 percent of dedicated Covid beds are lying vacant in J&K in general and Jammu province in particular. Although authorities are claiming that positive patients have been home isolated, it is believed that people have no faith in available health facilities. While people have lost faith in government runs health institutions, private hospitals are out of reach for the middle class due to rates in these hospitals. Financial Commissioner, Health and Medical Education, Atal Dulloo today said that there are some 600 covid dedicated ventilators around J&K with only 48 occupied currently. He said that 6000 category-I covid beds are available with the hospitals including 10000 bulk oxygen cylinders and 3500 medium-sized cylinders. He gave out that government is in a process of installing 36 oxygen generation plants with 23 to be made functional at the end of the week that will help in adding 2000 more oxygen beds to our kitty. He said that out of a total of 6000 dedicated beds for the Covid patients across J&K but only 807 have been occupied till date. 87 percent of beds are vacant in different hospitals. Dulloo said that out of total of 807 Covid patients admitted in different hospitals only 48 are on ventilators and 534 on oxygen support. “Over 600 ventilators, across the J&K, have been reserved for the Covid patients only”, he said and expressed satisfaction only 8 percent of dedicated ventilators have been occupied till date. “As of now, we have 13400 active cases out of which only 807 are admitted in hospitals. In the month of September 2020, we had 22000 positive cases at a peak. The rate of growth in positive cases is 12 percent while as mortality rate is 1.38 percent in J&K”, he said. |
