Early Times Report

Anantnag, May 8: Exposing preparedness claims of authorities, a video showing an old lady gasping for breath at Government Medical College Anantnag, on Saturday went viral on social media.
The video was shared by the lady’s attendants, who alleged, that the Associated Hospital of Government Medical College Anantnag was facing acute shortage of high flow medical oxygen.
In the video, the lady can be seen getting oxygen support from the oxygen concentrator which establishes the fact that the recently installed 1000 LMP Oxygen plant had either developed snag or the oxygen supplied by the plant wasn’t sufficient for the patients admitted to the hospital.
Soon after the video went viral, Deputy Commissioner Anantnag summoned Principal Medical College Anantnag, medical superintendent and other officials.
The agency supplying medical oxygen to GMC Anantnag was also called in the meeting. “In the meeting, we shared the details of oxygen requirement and Deputy Commissioner Anantnag assured us that he will take up the matter with the government and also directed the oxygen supplying form to supply oxygen to Anantnag on priority,” said an officer.
Earlier, Deputy Commissioner Anantnag directed them to create oxygen audit committees for GMC and other covid hospitals for monitoring the demand and supply of oxygen besides utilizing it rationally and judiciously.
“The committee having technical experts from MED and health sector will check the functioning of oxygen plants, supply pipes and oxyflow meter readings for its purity and quantity and submit daily reports in this regard” he said
Senior officials at Government Medical College admitted that they were facing an oxygen shortage and said that they are raising the issue hourly with the Government.
“We are in touch with the government. He conveyed this issue to FC health and Medical Education and have demanded the medical oxygen supplied to Anantnag as we cater south Kashmir and in fact Patients from Banihal also take admissions here,” an officer said.
He said that against the demand of 150 oxygen cylinders, the firm responsible for providing them O2 was giving them just 60 cylinders.
“Today they provided us with just 25 cylinders. We are facing the shortage of oxygen,” Medical Superintendent Dr Murtaza Fazal Ali told Early Times.
