Death of three DSEJ employees to Covid-19 in one day creates fear | Clamour grows to implement Roster system in Govt offices, dealing with non-essential services | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, May 8: The death of three employees including a Joint Director deputed in the office of Directorate of School Education Jammu (DSEJ) has created a sense of fear among the remaining employees and officials who have feared for their own as well as families’ safety in view of spread of Covid-19 strain. Apart from DSEJ, clamour is growing among the employees and officials of the government offices dealing with non-essential services, to implement the Roster system in view of the growing spread of the catastrophic second wave of Covid-19 for the families’ safety. On Friday, three officials of DSEJ including a Joint Director, Senior Assistant and Peon had succumbed to Covid-19, while several employees and officials posted at DSEJ had just recovered from Covid-19 infection. Moreover around half a dozen employees of DSEJ were found positive on 15th of April, while some other employees were detected positive later. Some of the employees of DSEJ are still being treated for Covid-19 infection and another employee is still critical, sources said, adding that during the first wave of Covid-19, whenever some employee was found positive the offices were closed for one or two weeks, however this time the DSEJ was not closed even for one day. “There are over 100 employees deputed at DSEJ, who have been maintaining social distancing on their own but the toilets, washrooms, common spaces in the offices are shared by maximum of the employees and there could be possibilities of catching the infection by other employees”, Neeraj Sharma President of General Line Teachers Forum said, adding that most of the employees were in shock and in fear but they have to attend the offices regularly. Sharma further said that safety of the employees as well as their families should be the utmost priority of the government and when schools were closed, the attendance in these offices should be made 50 percent by implementing a roster system. Apart from the School Education Department, employees working in all other government departments dealing with non-essential services have been demanding to adopt the Roster system in view of the increasing Covid-19 infections. “During the first wave of Corona, if a single employee in the govt office was found Covid-19 positive, the entire office was closed for weeks together but this time, despite emergence of Covid-19 positive patients in the offices, there was no change in the attendance”, another employee leader said, adding that the government should adopt roster system in all the offices, considering the safety of the employees as well as their families in view of devastating wave of Covid-19 strain. Sources further said that though the Heads of the Department were willing to adopt a roster system, but in view of no instructions from the Lieutenant Governor administration, maximum of them were unwilling to do the same, apprehending some reprisal. “The government should issue general instructions to the Head of Departments to adopt a roster system as in this hour the most important is the lives of employees and their families, even if there is some delay in some works”, the employees said. Director School Education Jammu, Dr Ravi Shankar Sharma didn’t pick up his phone for comments. |
