Online education proving difficult for toddlers
Parents call it a cruel joke, ask authorities to reconsider policy on virtual classrooms

Early Times Report

Jammu, May 31: The online education being imparted to children in Jammu and Kashmir amid the prevalent pandemic has become a cruel joke- both for the kids as well as for the teachers and parents in unison.
Social media these days is abuzz with the discussions over how futile the online mode of education is proving for the kids who haven’t even crossed 8 years of their age.
Under this kind of bizarre system, the kids are made to sit in front of the mobile phones or tablets wherein a teacher on the other end in a virtual classroom is imparting lecture to them. What is more ironic is the fact that there are many kids who haven’t even seen the classroom for real. From the time they got admission in schools, they were compelled to sit infront of their mobile phones and attend the virtual classroom. “Sometimes, there is a snag in a microphone and therefore a kid only sees his teacher lisping some alien language and at times, there is a snag in a camera and therefore a kid only listens to the voice reverberating from a dark window. All this is soul-destroying for our kids and for the parents. This is not education. This is a joke going on in the name of education,” an anguished parent wrote on social media.
There were many who said that imparting online education to kids as old as four or six years old is inhuman and torturous to the core. It was widely being discussed on social media platforms that the school managements are only exposing kids to such excruciating situations so that they justify the minting of school fee every month. “Otherwise tell me, how could an online class conducted through an erratic internet compensate for the real classroom activity for a kid. There are scores of children who have developed eye ailments due to being exposed infront of their mobile phones and tablets for hours together. Somebody must rectify such a wrong practice that is going on without any remorse. How long shall the authorities turn blind eye towards such a dangerous trend? One must speak out,” said another parent.
There were reports that the government is coming out with an application called ‘Simple app’ and it will have complete information about teachers as well as their online classes and lessons. Through this mode of education, children will have the option to watch videos and notes of the subject being taught by their school teacher along with the journal library. The government as per the reports is taking scores of measures to make online studies result oriented in the backdrop of prevalent situation.
The Department of Information and Technology has prepared a plan to make the app student-friendly and that first of all, a log-in will be created for all schools. Under this, children will be able to see the subjects being taught by their school teacher on the app directly. At present, however, no such facility was put in place.
