Pick & choose in survey victimizes girls of marriage age | | | Ashwani Sharma Early Times Report
Udhampur, June 2: Parents of Nisha devi (name changed), 19, of Majalta are worried as the girl has attained the marriage age but economic status of the family hampers them to solemnize the pious ritual. The father of the girl is a daily wage earner who is finding it hard to make both ends meet in the ongoing restrictions triggered by the deadly COVID-19 pandemic. After trying his best to get some money from friends and relatives he failed. Someone informed him about marriage scheme of Social Welfare Department wherein some financial help is given to poor girls to solemnize their marriages. All his hopes were dashed when he came to know that name of his daughter does not exist in the surveyed list of the beneficiary girls. There are many girls in J&K who are unable to get benefit of such government schemes thereby increasing the worries of their parents. When contacted Director Social Welfare, Samita Sethi said the survey of 2017 -18 to enlist the needy girls was not properly done and pick and choose was involved in it. “This has messed with many gullible girls who could not get benefits from the department for their marriages,” she informed adding that will rechecking the survey data within in soon and after that a fresh list will now be made by visiting door to door to register the real needy persons who deserve benefits of the scheme. |
