Our leader killed due to security lapse in Tral, govt should admit it: BJP | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, June 3: Asserting that its party leader and municipal councilor was killed due to security lapse in south Kashmir, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday asked how were militants roaming freely in the area. BJP municipal councilor Rakesh Pandita was killed by three suspected militants at Tral in south Kashmir district of Pulwama late on Wednesday night. The saffron party further said that it was a political killing and should not be associated with the return of Kashmiri Pandits. ?It is a security lapse. We're not security agencies aware that three unidentified militants were roaming in the area? Is not this a security lapse? We agree with the fact that our leader had not taken PSOs along with him,? BJP general secretary, J&K, Ashok Koul said. Mr Koul said the government should admit lapses on its part. He termed the incident a ''political'' killing, saying it should not be associated with return of Kashmiri Pandits. ?It is a political killing and should not be connected with the return of Kashmir Pandits or other things. BJP leaders are being targeted by militants from past one year in Kashmir,? he said. Such incidents, he said, should not take place. ?Pandita was trying to strengthen the Municipal Committee and was working for development,? he added. Following the killing, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Vijay Kumar on Thursday said that no protectee should go anywhere without Personal Security Officers (PSOs). He said despite providing two PSOs and secured hotel accommodation in Srinagar, the councilor went to Tral without any security. Mr Kumar said that the visits of protected persons are allowed only after ground assessment of local threat is done. ?Request is to all protectees not to violate Standard Operating Procedure (SOPs) and risk their lives unnecessarily,? he added.
