Chief Engineer Irrigation misled over functioning of Khiram Lift Irrigation scheme | | | Saahil Suhail Early Times Report
Anantnag, June 7: Shockingly, the engineers posted in Mechanical Irrigation Division Awantipora on Sunday misled Chief Engineer Irrigation over the functioning of Khiram Lift Irrigation scheme. The engineers conveyed Chief Engineer Irrigation that the scheme was functioning ‘normally’. Chief Engineer Irrigation Naresh Kumar, who visited Dadi Canal and Awantipora Canal on Sunday, had verbally sought the status for Khiram Lift Irrigation Scheme (old) from engineers of Mechanical Irrigation Division Awantipora. “They (Engineers) told the Chief Engineer that the Lift Irrigation Scheme was functioning normally,” an officer who accompanied the visiting Chief Engineer told Early Times over phone. The Chief Engineer, he said, however directed the engineers of Irrigation Division (civil) Anantnag to inspect the scheme and submit a factual report. On Monday, AEE Irrigation Division Sub-Division Bijbehara visited Khiram Lift Irrigation Scheme (old) and found that only one pump unit was running and the two other pumps were lying completely dysfunctional. “The undersigned inspected the LIS Old Khiram. Four pumping units are installed out of which three units are to be made operational under normal routine and one is kept as standby arrangement. However mechanical staff posted at the scheme revealed that one pumping unit was running. Presently two pumping units are lying completely dysfunctional which results in shortage of irrigation facilities to the area of the scheme,” AEE Irrigation Division Sub-Division Bijbehara communicated to his Executive Engineer on Monday. A copy of this communication lies with Early Times. AEE Irrigation Division Sub-Division Bijbehara said that there was apprehension of law and order in Khiram because of the non-availability of irrigation facilities to farmers. After receiving this factual report, the Executive Engineer Irrigation Division (Civil) Anantnag visited the Lift Irrigation Scheme Khiram on Monday evening along with his sub-ordinate staff. “I visited the scheme and yes I found only one pumping unit is running,” Executive Engineer Irrigation Division (Civil) Ajeet Kumar Anantnag told Early Times. He said that he would convey the same factual position to his higher officials as early as possible. Meanwhile, Executive Engineer Irrigation Division Gujeet Singh told Early Times that two pumping units out of four were lying dysfunctional. “We can’t run both the pumping units simultaneously as we face electricity voltage problems,” he said. Asked why he couldn’t ask the Power Development Department to connect the newly installed transformers, Singh said he will take the matter to the concerned department. “I have recently taken over and I will write to the PDD department,” he said. Meanwhile, a group of villagers expressed anguish over the lackadaisical attitude of authorities and sought the intervention of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha. |
