Early Times Report

Jammu, June 7: Gulchain Singh Charak, former minister and president, Dogra Sadar Sabha, Jammu has appealed to Jammu leaders representing various political, social and professional organizations and intellectual groups to come together, irrespective of their political affiliations, for formulating a stance for Jammu by consensus, for placing it before the Delimitation Commission, in order to secure a fair, dignified and prosperous future for the people of Jammu region.
Addressing media persons at Dogra Bhawan, Jammu today, he said that whether the case for Jammu is put before the Commission jointly or separately, it is important that all Jammu Leaders of various Political Parties and other Stakeholders speak to the Delimitation Commission from a common standpoint, so that Jammu’s point of view is heard.
Charak said that the bill re-organizing the erstwhile state of Jammu & Kashmir into two Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, passed by both Houses of Parliament in August 2019, also envisages delimitation of Parliamentary & Legislative Assembly Constituencies in J&K based on the 2011 Census.
He said that though it was painful that the erstwhile State of Jammu and Kashmir, created so painstakingly by our forefathers had to be bifurcated due to certain reasons, the people of Jammu have accepted the re-organization in the hope that the Region will get justice under the new arrangement.
He emphasized that, therefore, these are momentous times in the history of Jammu and Kashmir and present an opportunity to shape Jammu’s destiny by, amongst other things, putting the factual position before the Delimitation Commission, and making a bid for a fair share of Parliamentary & Legislative Assembly seats for Jammu to break the political stranglehold of the past seven decades, that the people of this Region have had to put up with, due to the unjustified smaller number of seats allocated to Jammu Region.
He further pointed out that the process of delimitation has already been initiated since quite some time and it is incumbent upon the citizens of Jammu to place their view point before the Delimitation Commission, in order to ensure that Jammu Region gets its due. He said that it is important that the channels of communication amongst all Stakeholders are opened and Jammu’s Intellectual, Political and Social Leadership starts a dialogue on this extremely critical issue to arrive at a joint stand for securing a fair share of seats for the people of Jammu Province.
Charak asserted that Jammu region has a huge reservoir of intellectual and political capital comprising seasoned politicians, retired civil and defense personnel, former judges, journalists, academicians, industrialists, businessmen and professionals in various fields, who have contributed significantly to public life in their own spheres and whose services are required by the people of Jammu at this crucial stage. He appealed to them to come forward decisively, at this critical juncture, to make a joint effort towards working out a strategy in this regard, in the best interest of the Region.
He offered the platform of Dogra Sadar Sabha, in keeping with its traditions right since its inception in the year 1904, for hosting the intellectual discourse for chalking out a Policy/Strategy in this regard, which serves to protect Jammu’s interest for generations to come.
