Present Sharf-e-Saqafat Award to Padam Shree Rahi: Prof Soz to LG | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, June 7: Seeking the intervention of Lt Governor Manoj Sinha, former union minister and senior Congress leader Prof Saifuddin Soz urged the administration to present “Sharf-e-Saqafat Award” to Padam Shree Prof Rehman Rahi. Award to former Kashmir University (KU) Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Rahi was announced by former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti when she was heading a coalition government with Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state. Prof Soz in a statement Monday afternoon said that during his telephonic conversation with Prof Rahi about his health, the Kashmiri poet, translator and critic said he was not given the award announced by former CM. “Prof Rahi Saheb expected wanted me to raise this issue before the people of Kashmir,” Prof Soz said. He claimed that he raised the award issue of Prof Rahi with LG Mr Sinha on Monday and earnestly requested him that since the Government is a running institution, Padam Shree awardee should be awarded the Sharf-e-Saqafat by the Union Territory administration as early as possible. “I hope the award ceremony will be fixed soon and the Sharf-e-Saqafat will reach Prof Rahi”, Prof Soz said. He expressed hope that Mr Sinha will take personnel interest in this issue of public importance. Prof Rahi (96) was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1961 for his poetry collection Nawroz-i-Saba, the Padma Shri in 2000, and India's highest literary award, the Jnanpith Award (for the year 2004) in 2007. He is the first Kashmiri writer to be awarded the Jnanpith, India's highest literary award for his poetic collection Siyah Rood Jaeren Manz (In Black Drizzle). He was honored with Sahitya Akademi Fellowship in 2000 by Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi. He remain associated with the Progressive Writers' Association, of which he became the General Secretary. He also edited a few issues of Kwang Posh, the literary journal of the Progressive Writer's Association. He was later a sub-editor in the Urdu daily Khidmat. He did MA in Persian in 1952 and English in 1962 from Jammu and Kashmir University where he taught Persian. He was on the editorial board of the Urdu daily Aajkal in Delhi from 1953 to 1955. He was also associated with the Cultural wing of communist Party of Kashmir during his student days. As translator he did excellent translation of Baba Farid's Sufi poetry to Kashmiri from Original Punjabi. |
