Unknown Khairwood smugglers attack Forest Officers with sharp edged weapon

Jammu, June 7: A Forest Officer today was injured while apprehending Khairwood smugglers from Nagrota area, however, a team of Forest field staff seized two cars and 38 logs of Khairwood from the spot.
According to sources acting on the basis of specific information regarding illegal smuggling of forest produce, a team of forest field staff of Jammu Forest range headed by Vijay khosla Range officer, Jammu, Diwakar Jamwal I/C Block Officer, alongwith staff of Social Forestry Department seized two Swift Cars bearing registration JK02CG-4544 SWIFT VDI and JK08EB-1824 loaded with 38 logs of illicit Khairwood at Dhok Wazira, Nagrota.
“The forest field had laid a nakha at Dhok Wazir to check illegal movement of forest produce and at about 4.00 A.M the alert forest field staff intercepted two swift dzire cars, on spotting the forest staff the offenders tried to run away from the spot”, sources said.
They further said, “When the forest field staff tried to apprehend them, the culprits attacked with sickle (Drathi) on the staff in which one forest guard namely Gulam Ali of Social Forestry Department was injured and the meantime smugglers managed to escape from the spot taking advantage of darkness.”
“With the assistance of locals approx 20 qtls of illicit khairwood were seized and brought to Gladni Depot for further proceedings. In this context the forest department has lodged FIR against the offenders for assaulting the on-duty government officials and the vehicle along with loaded Khairwood were seized under Indian Forest Act 1927 and Forest Offence Report (FOR) has also been registered”, they added.
Meanwhile Nagrota Police have registered a case against unknown assailants. “A case under section 353, 332 IPC has been registered at Police Station Nagrota, on the basis of a complaint lodged by the Forest Department”, said a Police Officer.
