PDP not to participate in delimitation process in J&K, says Bukhari | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, June 11: The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Friday said that it can’t participate in the ongoing delimitation process in Jam mu and Kashmir since it has no sitting Members of Parliament (MPs) or Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs). “Political parties in J&K can individually decide on their participation in the ongoing delimitation process. But, as far as the PDP is concerned, we have no MP or MLA at present so we can’t participate in the process,” PDP spokesperson told reporters in response to a question whether the People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) would participate in the delimitation process. PDP president Mehbooba Mufti is the Vice President of PAGD while sitting MP from Srinagar Farooq Abdullah is its president. Bukhari said the delimitation commission has been designed in a way that only the elected representatives are entitled to participate in the process. The remarks by the PDP comes at a time when National Conference headed by Farooq Abdullah, who is the brains behind the creation of PAGD, is likely to revisit its decision of not participating in the delimitation commission exercise. The Delimitation Commission headed by Justice (retd) Ranjana Prakash Desai was formed in March last year to carve out more Assembly and parliamentary constituencies in J&K. The commission’s term was extended by one year in March this year. |
