GDC Kalakote celebrate “World Blood Donor Day” to commemorate Azadi ka Amrut Mahotsav | | | Early Times Report
Kalakote, June 14: Literary Club in Collaboration with EBSB Club and Red Cross Club of the college organized Online Lecture to celebrate World’s Blood Donor Day in Commemoration to Azadi ka Amrut Mahotsav. The event serves to thank voluntary, unpaid blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood. Every year the World Health Organization (WHO) celebrates World Blood Donor Day on June 14. It also aims to raise awareness of the need for regular blood donations to ensure that all individuals and communities have access to affordable and timely supplies of safe and quality-assured blood and blood products, as an integral part of universal health coverage and a key component of effective health systems. The theme of this year’s campaign is “Give blood and keep the world beating" for the occasion to highlight the extraordinary service rendered by the blood donor’s world over. This essential effort during this time of pandemic highlights the crucial role of well-organized, committed voluntary, non-remunerated blood donors in ensuring a safe and sufficient blood supply during normal and emergency times. It is quite understandable that many blood donors may be apprehensive in donating blood during the pandemic, but the global health community continues to reiterate how it is a noble deed that could save many lives and creating awareness about the same is the need of the hour. With the same spirit, GDC Kalakote organized online Lecture on this year’s theme to create awareness among students about this noble deed of blood donation. The programme started with a detailed online lecture by Prof. Marve Sofi (Convener Literary club), wherein she talked at length about the history of celebrating this event and the objectives behind it. She further added that donating blood is a selfless service that can save lives. So, we should donate blood and encourage others for the same. Speaking on the event, Prof. Anayat Ullah Khan (Convener, EBSB Club) highlighted the health benefits of donating blood for a donor on top of the benefits that come from helping others. Moreover, the programme was graced by the presence of Dr. Romesh Kumar Gupta, Principal GDC Kalakote, who while virtually interacting with the students explained in detail the Social and the Health benefits of Blood Donation. He said, many of us may have reservations over donating blood because of being unsure of how safe the practice is. But there is scientific evidence that Healthy adults are permitted to donate blood every twelve weeks, up to four times each year. Eligible donors who maintain a weight of above 50 kgs will be able to donate up to 450 ml of blood per visit. The body is able to replenish this volume in within 24 hours of donation. |
