GMC Jammu turns fertile business ground for private players
Private ambulances charge hefty amount to shift patients; agents of labs, hospitals roam freely to lure customers

Early Times Report

Jammu, June 14: Some private ambulance operators under the banner of Charitable Trusts are openly looting the gullible patients and their attendants, visiting Government Medical Colleges and Hospital (GMC&H) here.
According to sources, the agents of these so called charity organizations under the name of some Charitable Trusts Ambulance Service could be found openly roaming inside the premises of GMC, especially in the emergency wing.
“Whenever an accident case arrives at GMC&H emergency wing, these agents can be found accompanying the attendants. They get involved in conversation with the attendants and family members of the patients and try to lure them to shift them to some private hospitals in Chandigarh, Amritsar, Ludhiana etc,” a regular visitor to GMC informed, adding that on one hand they loot the gullible patients, by overcharging them with huge ambulance fare to the tune of several thousand ranging from Rs 10,000 to Rs. 80,000”.
Few days back, the activists of Dogra Front had lodged a strong protest against these so called Charitable Trusts for looting the patients. It was alleged that under the name of charity, these Trusts have been looting patients, by charging Rs 10,000 for shifting patients to private hospitals.
“Apart from looting patients’ families by overcharging fare, these ambulance drivers have contacts with the management of private hospitals from where they also charge huge commission for shifting a patient”, an insider said, adding that these agents of Charitable Trusts as well as of private hospitals have links with some insiders in the GMC&H, who provide them details about the patients, who could be shifted to private hospitals for specialised treatment.
Sources further said that apart from private ambulance services, the agents of some private laboratories can also be found roaming inside GMC premises to lure patients. “The doctors have been recommending tests for various reasons. The situation in GMC unfolds in such a way that once a test is prescribed, within few minutes, few agents of private labs emerge there and start convincing the patient to get the tests conducted from a particular lab, giving so called concessions and provide test reports inside the hospital”, the insider said, adding that there appeared to be a nexus running inside the hospital, while administration is totally silent over the matter.
These so-called Charitable Trust ambulance services have been operating from within the GMC premises since last many years but till date no action has been taken by the administration.
Medical Superintendent of GMC&H Dr. ADS Manhas said that he has already passed the instructions to security officers, not to allow parking of these private ambulance services inside GMC premises.
He further said that the administration can only stop parking of these vehicles inside GMC premises but the patient also has every right to avail benefit of private ambulance services. “If an ambulance enters GMC premises to take or drop a patient, we cannot deny them entry”, Dr Manhas said.
Asked about agents of private hospitals and labs roaming inside GMC premises, Dr. Manhas said that instructions have been passed to security staff to take action as well as a communiqué has been forwarded to higher ups on the issue.
