Early Times Report

Rajouri, June 16: Alleged lackadaisical attitude of the employees of Jal Shakti Department in this frontier district has deprived thousands of people of potable water supply.
Residents told Early Times worn out pipelines and leakage at different places are a cause of concern but department “seems least interested in addressing these issues.”
“The department has not been able to carryout repair and replacement work of pipelines. The department works only on papers and when people approach the concerned officials, they give only lip service and on ground no work is done,” residents alleged. Although the condition of PHE water supply is poor in the entire district, the Panchayat Daraj-B of Kotranka tehsil of Rajouri district has been reeling under severe water scarcity due to leakage in pipelines as most of the water gets wasted. Not only rural areas but the town is also facing the same problem.
People in many areas have put polythene on the pipeline to stop leakage and at many places. “The pipes have not been replaced for the past 40 years. We hardly get water supply for half an hour,” they claimed.
“There is only a water tank which caters to three villages,” they said further adding that PM Modi had launched a drive of toilet facilities at every household but without water these toilets are useless due to which people are compelled to defecate in the open.
When contacted the Superintending Engineer Jal Shakti Rajouri, said that he has joined recently and is unaware of the issue. “I will inquire about the matter and try to sort out the issue at the earliest,” he added.
