Expedite sports infrastructure projects to deviate youth from drugs: Tarun Uppal
6/17/2021 10:39:54 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, June 17: Chairperson, Nirbhay Bharat Foundation (NBF), Tarun Uppal today castigated Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory administration for the snail’s pace progress on the sports infrastructure projects under PMDP which are far from being ready despite 5 years having elapsed by now. He appealed to the Lieutinant Governor and his Advisor to issue directions to complete these projects at the earliest as sports plays a significant role in deviating youth from drugs towards healthy lifestyle.
In a statement issued to media here today, Tarun Uppal said, Jammu and Kashmir Government’s tall claims of promoting sports on priority with world class infrastructure appear to have almost fallen flat.
The Union Ministry of Youth Services and Sports in 2016 had announced multi-utility indoor stadiums for all the 22 districts of the erstwhile State of Jammu and Kashmir with an aim to groom and enhance sports talent among the youth of this area but no substantial is visible on ground till date. Jammu and Kashmir in 2019 was bifurcated into two Union Territories i.e. Jammu and Kashmir and the Ladakh UT as a result of which J&K was to have 20 indoor sports complexes under PMDP as two were meant for Ladakh.
Chairperson, Nirbhay Bharat Foundation recalled that in October 2020, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant, Governor Manoj Sinha who is also President of J&K Sports Council, sanctioned Rs. 200 crore under PMDP for upgradation of sports infrastructure and encouragement of budding talent in this field during an event in Rajouri district but nothing seems to have been done thereafter till date. He said that it is known to one and all that unscrupulous elements are luring boys and girls towards using drugs making the situation alarming and keeping the youth involved in sports can stop them from indulging in such practice. He asserted that in view of this aspect there is a dire need to expedite the works on sports infrastructure under PMDP failing which there is every apprehension of drug menace becoming a pandemic more serious than COVID-19.
While appreciating Lt Governor for doubling Capex Budget, Tarun Uppal appealed to him and his Advisor Farooq Khan, who is also in-charge Youth Services and Sports, to direct the authorities concerned to complete all the multi-utility indoor stadiums at the earliest so that youth will be diverted towards the sports thus raising the chances of winning medals and trophies for the Union Territory besides giving them exposure and ensuring better health.
He also appreciated Farooq Khan for showing keen interest and reviewing the weekly progress report of the aforesiad multi-utility indoor stadiums. He further appealed to the Advisor Khan to complete all these indoor stadiums without any further delay.
