Poonch grappling with lack of basic amenities | Irregular power supply, water scarcity, poor road connectivity irk residents | | Rajesh Tandon
Early Times Report
Poonch, June 17: Poonch district is grappling with shortage of basic amenities, including irregular power supply, scarcity of drinking water and poor road connectivity. As the summer season is at its peak, the Power Department has started resorting to prolonged curtailment. The online classes of students are suffering due to non availability of power. The residents said, “Whenever we ask for the reason for prolonged power cuts we are told that 132 KV has suffered damage. We fail to understand why this transmission line develops a snag every year. A probe should be ordered to ascertain why the same problem persists every year.” Similar is the condition of the PHE water supply scheme in the district. There are still several areas where water supply never reaches. Supply pipelines are damaged at several points due to which water continues to leak as a result , supply doesn’t reach at tail end areas. People have to travel 10 kms to fetch water for daily needs. The tanker supply of the PHE department is also not working properly as most of the tankers are so old that these remain out of order and employees are hardly seen discharging their duties due to which supply is not given on time. The roads are in shambles. Not to talk of the road connectivity in rural areas even the town and National Highways are also full of pits, which are not properly repaired. Locals said that whenever there are VIP visits, the department fills these pits which don’t stay for long and as soon as it rains, these patches wear out. |
