Early Times Report
Jammu, June 17: For the first time in the modern history of Jammu and Kashmir, instead of elected representatives, actors from the Indian film industry including Bolllywood star Huma Qureshi could be seen making speeches in Jammu’s legislative assembly. Maharani- a Hindi-language drama streaming television series created by Subhash Kapoor is directed by Karan Sharma and stars Huma Qureshi as the protagonist along with Sohum Shah, Amit Sial, Kani Kusruti and Inaamulhaq. The political multi-seasons series is inspired by what happened in Bihar in the 1990s when Lalu Prasad Yadav made his homemaker wife Rabri Devi his successor. There are 10 episodes in season one and episode 3 of the series have been shot in the Legislative Assembly complex at Jammu wherein Rabri Devi played by Huma Qureshi is shown seeking the trust vote. The story is of September 1998 when Bihar’s Chief Minister Rabri Devi moved to secure a vote of confidence in the Bihar Assembly on September 21,1998. Although the Assembly session had been convened exclusively to discuss the Bihar State Reorganisation Bill, which seeks to carve out a Vananchal state from southern Bihar, the vote of confidence was sought in order to ensure that the BJP was left with no overt reason to dismiss the State Government. The BJP, the Samata Party, the Janata Dal and the Jharkhand parties walked out, faced with the certainty of defeat, and the Rabri Devi Government sailed through, 190 to none. The Assembly also rejected the Vananchal bill. On this issue the RJD was backed by 13 of the 29 Congress(I) MLAs, all five MLAs of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and 11 independents. In the series wherein that session has been filmed, the assembly has been shown in its entirety with proper sitting arrangements for treasury and opposition benches. The legislative assembly is witnessing no proceedings since the BJP pulled out the PDP led government in J&K on June 18, 2018. Later in November, that year, Governor Satya Pal Malik dissolved the assembly. Since then, the assembly complex here is devoid of the public representatives. The shootings have been allowed, as per reports, to promote tourism and attract film makers to shoot in the newly carved out union territory. The shoot began on April 2 this year. The complex and its surroundings had a splash of big lights, trunks carrying dresses and other accessories of the artists and shooting crew, make-up vans, gen-set etc. all around. The film-maker, accompanied by actor Vineet Kumar discussed with the Principal Secretary about his upcoming web-series "Maharani" to be shot at different locations of Jammu for five days. He informed that around 100 local artists from the theatre and cultural department were roped in for the web-series. The government had assured full support of the administration to the film-maker, the Principal Secretary to LG, Nitishwar Kumar observed that the government was making best possible efforts towards achieving the creation of a vibrant film ecosystem in the UT, besides developing suitable environment to make J&K a favourite destination for film-shooting. "J&K has a vast pool of artistic talent. The shooting of the new web-series in Jammu will provide opportunities to the local artists to showcase their talent and capabilities on such a big platform," the Principal Secretary Nitishwar Kumar was quoted saying. |
